On November 9, 2007, an expert panel, gathered by the American College of Dentists, Ontario Chapter, came together in Toronto, Ontario, to discuss dental materials and how trust in these materials has been eroded in recent years because of illegal or counterfeit materials on the market.

The panel was moderated by Dr. John O’Keefe, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the Canadian Dental Association. Dr. O’Keefe was given permission to make an audio recording of the presentations which has been highlighted and reproduced on the Journal web site at http://www.cda-adc.ca/en/cda/news_events/media/dentistry_news/2008/02_21_08.asp

What makes this discussion unique is the combination of scientific, regulatory and business perspectives to the issue of “grey market” sales in Canada , the risks taken by dentists who may be purchasing illegal or counterfeit materials, and the steps they can take to ensure that their patients receive optimum care from licensed products supplied by licensed distributors

As a DIAC member, we are encouraged to add the link to their web sites as a source of information and education for their customers and clients.

Universal Dental Laboratories has long been involved in the training and education of new generation of dental technologists by actively supporting the Dental Technology Program of Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT).  We do this by offering scholarships,  employment and training opportunities for the NAIT dental technology student during the summer months.

As another effort of our on-going support for the development of new blood for dental technology profession. We recently donated two new steam cleaning units to Dental Technology Program of NAIT to enhance the learning experience of its students.

Universal Dental Laboratories lighting up The Avenue of Nations (downtown section of 107 Avenue , Edmonton) this Christmas season.

Ever since UDL moved to the Avenue of Nations section of the 107 Avenue, it had been the major force in revitalizing that area of the city. The city of Edmonton had long recognized and appreciated the effort that UDL made to improve that part of the city. In a pilot project to further enhance the beauty of The Avenue of Nations, the City and UDL joined together to put up Christmas light on the city own trees in front of the UDL building. This is a first with a commercial property on the Avenue of Nations and we hope this beautification project will spread to the other businesses on the avenue in the years to come.

One of the hand-outs of our Dr. Freedman course on February 19th, incorrectly indicating the Vita Omega 900 porcelain, a metal ceramic porcelain, is suitable for processing ceramic veneer. Although it is possible to use metal ceramic porcelain to fabricate all-ceramic veneer, with the advancement of all-ceramic system such as the IPS Empress, it is no longer a prefer technique to use PMF porcelain to create all ceramic veneer. We hope this clear up concern that might arise from that hand-out.
